Scooter battery: 5 advantages of lithium battery vs. lead gel battery

Most standard mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs have a lead gel battery. When designing Scoozy, we consciously chose to equip this standard with a lithium battery. Why? In this blog, we give the 5 advantages for the energy consumption of a li-ion battery compared to a lead gel battery, and we explain why this is ultimately a more economical and sustainable option.

LITHIUM BATTERIES FOR MOBILITY SCOOTERS

Scoozy has a lithium battery with a range of 50 kilometres as standard. You can expand the range to 100 kilometres with a second battery. Most standard mobility scooters have a lead gel battery which is cheaper but lasts less. In addition, a lead gel battery requires more maintenance and is more sensitive to incorrect use. A lithium battery retains its capacity longer and lasts typically four times as long. Over the entire service life, this is cheaper per kilometre driven.

THE 5 ADVANTAGES IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF A LI-ION BATTERY

1. LONGER LIFESPAN

The capacity of a battery decreases slightly with each charging cycle. The advantage of a li-ion battery is that it retains its capacity much longer. A Lithium battery lasts 3 to 4 times as long, up to 1500/2000 charging cycles. Gel batteries for mobility scooters break down after a maximum of 300-500 cycles, whereby maintenance and correct use are crucial.

2. FAST AND EFFICIENT CHARGING

Lithium batteries for mobility scooters can be charged quickly to 100% capacity. With gel batteries, an absorption phase is required to charge the last 20% of the capacity. If the battery is regularly not fully charged, this is not a problem, and the lithium battery will not be damaged. With lead-acid batteries, it is harmful not to charge fully.

3. WEIGHT

A lead battery is a lot heavier than a lithium battery, the lithium battery is 4 times as light as a lead battery with the same energy, so it also costs less energy to drive.

4. LITTLE ENERGY LOST

Lithium batteries are significantly more efficient in storing energy than lead batteries. Lithium batteries charge with an efficiency of almost 100% compared to 85% with the vast majority of lead gel batteries.

5. CLIMATE RESISTANCE

Both gel and lithium batteries lose capacity in cold environments. With the lithium battery, however, this loss is minimal. A Lithium battery has a capacity of 80% at a temperature of -20˚C. This is only 30% with a lead-gel battery.
